Carlos picks up Frankie on Tuesday.

She was confident it was going to happen. I was not. I know how volatile a man is.

But she was right.

He’s not only a biker who goes to biker clubs and flashes his chest and abs in skintight T-shirts. He called her every day until she made herself available for him.

I wave at her from the porch, keeping my eyes on them until they vanish at the crossroads.

“Happy Frankie,” I mutter, spinning and going straight to the bathroom.

I draw myself a bath, slide into the tub, pick up my phone, and talk to Olivia for a good hour or so before getting out and putting my robe on.

Around five, I set a cup of coffee on the patio table and start reading when my phone rings.

Frankie’s name flashes across the screen.

“What? I thought you were on a date. Please don’t tell me he’s bailed out on you.”

I hear static for a moment.

“Frankie?”

I peer at my phone screen.

“Are you there?”

She doesn’t answer, but I hear voices in the background and women giggling.

Did she butt dial me?

“Frankie?”

Her voice bursts into my ear.

“Hey. Yes. It’s me. Sorry, I didn’t realize you’re on.”

She talks fast, unlike her.

“What’s going on? Is everything okay?”

“What are you doing?” she asks.

I put her on speaker.

“Me? What am I doing? You’re out. I’m home. What do you think I’m doing? I’m reading. I talked to Olivia. They saw the Colosseum and Roman Forum.”

“Okay. All right... Are you free?”

My eyebrows lift.

“Free? I took a bath. I’m on the patio. Reading... As I said.”

“Would you like to come with us for a ride?”

She sounds stilted.

“Frankie... Is that you?” I joke.

“Haha. It’s me. Put some clothes on. I’m sending someone to pick you up.”

“Who?”

“You’ll see. You’ll thank me later.”

“Frankie?”

She hangs up.

I call her back. She doesn’t answer, my call going straight to her voicemail.

What a stubborn little ass she is.

Put some clothes on for what? Or who?

Growling with frustration, I rise from my chair and go to the closet.

Did she mean a bike ride? Or a ride ride?

I pull out a pair of jeans, a soft cotton bra and matching panties, a white T-shirt, and a pair of boots.

She didn’t even say what time that person would come.

Ahh.

I shed my robe, brush my freshly washed hair with my fingers, and start putting my clothes on.

I pick a light jacket and set it on a chair in the living room when I hear the unmistakable sound of a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Is she for real? I tried to imagine who she sent to pick me up. It must be Carlos’ friend, the one he rode with when we had dinner with Amber.

She never talked about him.

Whoever he is, boots are in order. I twirl in the middle of the room, looking for them. I pull them on and shrug my jacket on too when the noise subsides, and I hear footsteps in front of the entrance.

“I’m coming,” I shout just as I hear a short knock on the door.
